Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third child of the family. After her father died as a Carnival barker when Ruth was just a little girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was raised in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she attended school. She left the school she was attending within two years of her education in order to pursue acting as a profession. The path she chose was not without obstacles. In New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines, the theatre work that she longed for was not available. As a hat check woman in a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. There she was able to earn a living as an usherette by day, and at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. She has also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
